Been there, darling—properly been there. Let me tell you about my first flat in Hackney, back in 2017. The bathroom was a proper horror show. Peeling vinyl, mould in the grout… you get the picture. I thought I'd have to spend a fortune to fix it up. Turns out? Not necessarily.

I remember wandering around a Tile Giant outlet on the outskirts of London one drizzly Tuesday—utterly lost, mind you—and stumbling upon these stunning Moroccan-style zellige-look tiles. They were in the clearance section, slightly mismatched batches. Got 'em for under £15 per square metre. The bloke at the counter said they were "discontinued." My gain, frankly. You've got to dig around, you know? Don't just walk into the first fancy showroom on King's Road and faint at the prices.

Oh, and factory shops! There's a place near Stoke-on-Trent—I drove up once on a whim—where seconds and overstock from big ceramic brands get flogged at silly discounts. Chips on the edges? Hardly noticeable once they're up. A tiny colour variation? Adds character, I say. My mate Sam fitted some from there in her loo, and everyone asks if she hired some posh designer. She just winks.

Then there's online—but careful, yeah? I ordered some "terrazzo-effect" tiles from an eBay seller once. Looked gorgeous in the photos. Turned up and they felt like brittle biscuit, chipped in transit. Lesson learned: always get a sample first. Always. Even if it costs a few quid. Stick it on the wall, live with it for a week, see it in different lights. Bathroom light is a tricky beast—makes colours go all moody.

Charity renovation hubs, too. There's one in Bristol I love, where they salvage tiles from old houses, hotels, even pubs. Got these beautiful art deco black-and-whites from a 1920s building demolition. Each one had a story. Bit of cleaning, and they looked million-dollar. Felt like a treasure hunt, honestly.

Thing is, "cheap" doesn't have to mean "dull." Sometimes it's about timing. End-of-line sales, clearance corners, even asking nicely if a supplier has any broken pallets lying about. I once sweet-talked a warehouse manager into selling me half a pallet of subway tiles because the packaging was water-damaged. Tiles were perfectly fine. Just needed drying out.

And mix 'em! Spend a bit on a few fancy handmade ones as a feature strip, then use simpler, plain tiles for the rest. Your eye goes straight to the pretty bit—clever, innit?

At the end of the day, it's about keeping your wits about you. Don't rush. Touch the tiles, see them wet—because they will be, in a bathroom. Imagine the steam, the soap splash, the morning light hitting them. It's not just about picking something off a screen.

Right, I'm off to make a cuppa. But honestly—dig a little. The good stuff's out there, hiding in plain sight.

Right, so you're after some decent bathroom tiles that won't have you eating beans on toast for a mo…

[2

post-377","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-bathroom
["GET
